Where’s the Beef? Nah, Where’s the Pizza?

Upon arriving in Argentina, a country known for legendary beef consumption, the stateside grill jockey may immediately set off on something akin to pilgrimage, hitting every asado joint in B.A.

Personally, I make a beeline for “El Cuartito” – the best pizza in the civilized world – hands down.  I have eaten it everywhere; in San Francisco, Los Angeles, Mexico, Chicago, New York, Italy, France and even in Dubrovnik.  But I have never had better pizza than I have in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

CIMG5893  This place also happens to be Robert Duval’s and Francis Coppola’s favorite – so I’m in some pretty good company.  If you happen to go, make sure you get the fuggzetta with faina.  This is a “Pizza Bianco” without the gloppy red sauce you might be used to having – and covered with onions.  It’s stuffed with a triple cream CIMG5899cheese and is so rich and luxurious that one bite will send you into an orgasmic food induced coma and you may end up missing your return flight.  But there’s more – place a slice of faina, a simple garbanzo flour torte on top of it and eat them together… At the same time, for a food experience that you will never have anywhere else.  I don’t know where the idea came from but it’s bang on I tell you.  Here’s a shot of what the faina looks like so you can wrap your head around the concept.

CIMG5900And that’s not all, the rest of their pies are completely sublime.  So if you do go, don’t forget the pizza.  And check my recipes for a Faina recipe you can make yourself!

  1. Wow, looks like them dudes bring pizza to a whole other level. Looks good!

PS, I ordered that BBQ book you recommended. Looking forward to flipping though it’s pages here in a couple days. Thanks for that!

  2. Excellent! I know you’ll appreciate it. If you are in the mood for more, do check out “Smokestack Lightning” and “Searching for the Dixie Barbecue (Journeys into the Southern Psyche)” both of which are prose heavy, you might get a kick from those.
